RESURRECT THE ICONIC

February 2023, Luke was inspired by a sculpture he saw. With couture deeply embedded in the history of my work, he had the idea to create a dress out of iconic vintage cameras, though Luke thought it would be impossible. The idea though, kept niggling at him and he couldn’t shake it. Fast forward two years to February 2025, and a conversation with his friend Gabrielle changed everything.
Luke bought together a team of some of his closest people to embark on this journey with him, especially his partner Lila who was with Luke throughout the process contributing remarkable amounts of creativity to this creation.
Over six months, Luke collected more than 350 vintage cameras and accessories, some over 100 years old.
One day, Luke’s mother discovered some old photographs she didn’t know she had. This sparked the idea to make the corset of the dress from photos of his family tree, some over 80 years old. Luke also included a special photo of his son, Milo.
Although every photograph was meaningful, one in particular struck the artist in an extremely emotional way. It was of his father when he was young, using a vintage camera. After some intense research, Luke discovered exactly which camera it was. He made the decision to source one and use it to take the photographs of this creation, in honour of his Dad. This is the first time he had ever used a film camera for his art. Luke also used his digital camera to create ‘The Best Of Both Worlds.’
The muse: Tilly, a key part of Luke’s original Resurrection series.
The camera in her hands: A Zeiss Ikon Derval Nettar, Luke’s oldest camera of his personal collection.
The setting: Luke’s friend’s farm, where they lit a fire and laid a bed of ash – a perfect foundation for rebirth.
Luke struggled immensely with the passing of my father. He had kept the last of his ashes, for something truly special. Just before shooting, I sprinkled them into the dress. After a few quiet moments – art was made. This ones for you Dad.
